Chapter 11 / Fog and Asphalt

I didn’t know where I was, but it was warm and soft and smelled like the pine air fresheners Pops used to hang from his rearview mirror. I figured I was in a car, but I didn’t want to open my eyes. I could see Grammie and Pops in my mind and I didn’t want to lose them. It had been a long time. A car door squeaked open and the wet cold came in along with one of the men. Then another door opened and there was the other man. “How much do you think we’ll get,” one of them asked, and the other one said, “Enough.” I wondered what they were talking about. They shook me and I opened my eyes, but outside the car was nothing but fog and asphalt. Inside the car was just me and them. And that’s when I knew.
