Chapter 79 / Okay

I woke up laying on my back in some high grass. The kid was sitting next to me. His back was turned but I could hear him cryin’.

“We’re gonna be okay,” I said. “We’re gonna find a new place and…”

“Danny’s dead,” the kid said. Part of me wanted to lie to him and make him feel better, but that part had been keepin’ quiet lately. Hank’s girl was sleeping on the other side of him and she woke up. She didn’t say a word, but the kid nodded like she did. “I knew it when I saw you,” he said to me.

I was gonna say I was sorry. Instead, I said, “I killed him.” The kid didn’t react. I continued. “Him and Aaron and Mike. I killed them for leading Karch to us. I was gonna kill you to keep you from tellin’ Karch about the guns. And then I killed Karch. They’re all gone and it’s all been for nothin’ because I killed them.” We all sat there for a minute longer. Quiet. Just listening to old Hank snore.

“No, you didn’t,” the kid said. “The other one did. The one you talked to all the time. Do you still talk to him?”

I shook my head. Not lately.

After a minute, the kid asked, “We goin’ to Indian Cave?”

I shook my head. “I don’t care to ever hold a gun again.”

“Why’d you pick that place to stash stuff?”

“It’s far away from any other people,” I said. “Nobody knows about it.”

The kid nodded and wiped at his eyes and said, “Then that’s where we’re goin’. We’re gonna be okay.”
