Chapter 80 / The Past Is Gone

Three more showed up today. Two from Andersonville and a guy who said he was a Suncatcher. I could tell he was a Hunter, but I didn’t say anything. “You don’t ask a starvin’ man where all his food went,” Dad says. “You just feed him.” See, the past isn’t like a watch you keep, even after it stops running. Or maybe that’s just what it’s like: a broken watch that’ll mess you up if you try to go by it. The past is gone. Like it never existed in the first place. So there are thirty-seven of us now. Thirty-seven people letting go of fear and anger and hanging on to each other instead. Because that’s how the world gets put back together.
